One of the most important things that people who are planning to undergo a nose surgery must consider is to choose the right rhinoplasty surgeon to perform the procedure. As a general fact in the plastic surgery field, rhinoplasty surgeons are cosmetic surgeons who specialize in rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty --- surgical procedures that change the structure of the nose in order to enhance its appearance or to correct certain deformities.

It is practically essential for prospective patients to choose the right rhinoplasty surgeon before undergoing a nasal reshaping. The choice that the patient makes at this point could contribute largely to the outcome that he or she is eyeing to acquire. As a matter of fact, the success and failure of any surgery may lie in the hands of the chosen cosmetic surgeon who performs the procedure. Thus, this decision has to be carefully thought out and patients must perform some background investigation as to what kind of plastic surgeon they are about to trust their bodies on.

First and foremost, a glaring evidence of a plastic surgeons expertise is his or her board certification. Board Certification is an important aspect of choosing a rhinoplasty surgeon. A rhinoplasty surgeon certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS) stresses that such surgeon has met the rigorous standards of ABFPRS and is noteworthy in terms of skills and experience.

To be certified in the ABFPRS, a plastic surgeon needs to complete an approved residency after finishing medical school in one or two surgical specialties focusing on facial plastic surgery. These specialties may include Otolaryngology or plastic surgery.

Next, the rhinoplasty surgeon must have eaed prior certification in any of the specialties mentioned above through the American Board of Medical Specialties or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Canada. Also, he or she must have submitted an acceptable record of at least two years of clinical experience including operative reports of a minimum of 100 facial plastic surgeries.

In addition to that, the rhinoplasty surgeon must also complete a two-day examination, along with, proper licensure and subscription to the ABFPRS Code of Ethics.

Through these guidelines, the ABFPRS can ensure that when it gives out a certification to a plastic surgeon, a thorough evaluation of the surgeons credentials have taken place. This way, patients are protected from the hazards that may be caused by incompetent plastic surgeons.

Furthermore, patients may also take a look at the plastic surgeons track record. A plastic surgeon who has done a lot of successful rhinoplasty surgeries is a lot credible than the one who only did a few, despite the presence of board certification. Surgeons who have performed many rhinoplasty procedures will have more time to perfect their craft, and are often more adept at handling complications that may arise during the operation.

Lastly, the surgeons hospital privileges can also be a good indicator of his expertise, since hospitals normally give privileges only to trusted surgeons.

All these qualifications coupled with a caring and nurturing attitude would make an excellent rhinoplasty surgeon.

Recovering from Your Surgery For most cosmetic plastic surgical procedures, you will need to restrict your normal activities for a time following surgery. As a rule, cosmetic plastic surgery is considered "elective surgery" and is not covered by most insurance plans. Would you use a cream or soap that may have the following long term side effects skin cancer, liver damage, kidney damage or poisoning?

In the mode appearance conscious society in which we live there is a myth that lighter paler complexions portray beauty, riches and success.

This misguided belief has resulted in a huge market in the UK of skin lightening products. Some people use them secretly knowing what the side effects are, others using poorly labelled under the counter products not knowing what dangers they are letting themselves in for. Manufacturers may not be fully versed with the side effects or labelling may be misleading or economical with the truth.

Why do we have colour in our skin?

There are three reasons for the colour of our skin:

The cells contained within the dermis and epidermis provide a natural yellow, white colour

o Superficial blood vessels provide a blue or red tint determined by oxygen content

o Melanin produced by melanocytes scattered within the basal layer of the skin

It is this third point which determines how dark a persons skin is; more melanin production results in darker skin. Melanin has another key function - it plays a major protective role. It is the skins own natural protection from the harmful ultra violet rays of the sun. Without it the skin is extremely vulnerable and we would have to cover exposed skins with sun screen or risk a greater chance of developing skin cancer.

How skin lightening products work

There are two chemicals found in skin lightening products, Hydroquinone or Mercury.

o Hydroquinone (C6H6O2) is a severely toxic and very powerful chemical used in photo processing, the manufacture of rubber and is an active agent in hair dyes.

o Mercury in the form of Mercury Chloride & Ammoniated Mercury is carcinogenic. They appear on the list of toxic substances that can only be purchased via pharmacies with prescribed labels of toxicity.

Both products perform a similar process. In the short term they will initially cause the skin to lighten by inhibiting the production of melanin. Without melanin formation in the basal layer no brown pigmentation will be visible.

The long term effects, however, are those that must be addressed.

The long term effects of using skin lightening products

Hydroquinone or Mercury applied to the skin will react with ultra violet rays and re-oxidise, leading to more pigmentation and premature ageing. More product is then applied in an attempt to correct the darker blotchy appearance.

These are the beginnings of a vicious cycle. By altering the skins natural structure and inhibiting the production of Melanin, its natural protection, the skin is more susceptible to skin cancer.

Prolonged use of Hydroquinone will thicken collegen fibres damaging the connective tissues. The result is rough blotchy skin leaving it with a spotty cavier appearance.

Mercury will slowly accumulate within the skin cells striping the skin of its natural pigment leaving behind the tell tale signs of gray/ blue pigmentation in the folds of the skin. In the long term the chemical will damage vital organs and lead to liver and kidney failure and mercury poisoning.

Are these products legal?

Products containing up to 2 percent Hydroquinone were legally available in the UK until 2001 when the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) issued the draft 24th Commission Directive. This bans preparations with Hydroquinone due to the long term effects as it accumulates in the tissues. The UK Cosmetic Product Regulations 1978 prohibits the use of Mercury compounds.

However, the demand for theses products is so high that there are illegal imports via small operators from Asia and Africa of creams, lotions and soaps of up to 6 percent which are sold under the counter in the UK. Graham McPherson from Trading Standards said we regularly find consignments varying from a couple of hundred items to a couple of thousand items on a monthly basis.

Second generation of skin lightening products

Sujata Kashap, a skin care specialist, has been investigating a new highly toxic chemical that is already hitting the shops. Sujata said even if hydroquinone and mercury products are successfully banned in the UK there is be a second generation of products containing Kajoic Acid that also work by inhibiting melanin production. Which means that in 5 years time we will be back in the same situation.

We need to stop this disease from spreading

For many years beauty has been associated with being fair. Models are as white as possible and people are commended on the faiess of their skin. We feel that we must bow down to the social pressures or we suffer from the psychological effects which cause us to use products which may permanently disfigure or cause horrific side effects.

Banning products containing Hydroquinone and Mercury will not stop the products from entering the UK and being sold under the counter. The only way we can make a positive impact on preventing this disease from spreading is through continuous campaigns raising awareness via the media and the govement.

It is official. Spring has sprung, bringing along with it spring fever. I can see it in my students eyes. They are practically breaking out in hives itching to soak up the warm spring sun, despite the fact they are sitting in a class that discusses skin cancer prevention.

Alas, despite their instructors desperate pleadings, these 20-something-year-old college students find it difficult, if not arduous, to forego their so-called need to tan that Hollywood constantly feeds and propagates. And while it is quite simply impossible for anyone to get a safe tan from tanning beds and other forms of ultraviolet radiation, there are several high-quality sunless tanning mousses that not only achieve that coveted bronze look, naturally, but also provide essential sun protection. Now my students, even my pageant girls, can have the best of both worlds.

They no longer have to walk into class with guilt-ridden faces knowing they have completely disregarded the very real dangers associated with using tanning beds. They are happy and healthy. And that makes me, the now dubbed skin cancer crusader happy, too.

Yet, despite the fact I am slowly replacing their love for tanning with a safe alteativethat of sunless tanning foams such as those developed and manufactured by Neostrata (which gaered the prestigious Gold Triangle Award from the American Academy of Dermatology in 2005), there remains a deeply pressing conce; a lingering question. How do we educators and advocates effectively tackle the culture of tanning, and thus significantly reduce the alarming increase in skin cancer incidence and mortality as a result of frequenting tanning salons?

Contrary to popular belief, the bottom-line is that there is no such thing as a safe tan. Any tan is damage to your skin. And that is a fact. The Indoor Tanning Association (ITA) would have the consumer-driven pop culture hold to the myth that tanning beds are safe, and are even a viable way of treating a variety of skin issues such as acne, or even Seasonal Affective Disorder. Such claims are false, even irresponsible and potentially deadly, and credible scientific research proves it. There is no way to achieve a safe, healthy tan from tanning beds or other sources of ultraviolet radiation.

Consider the following case-and-point.

The American Academy of Dermatology, in conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently conducted a lengthy and independent research study which sheds some light on this issue, thus proving valuable insight into a media-inundated industry wrought with misleading, confusing, and even erroneous claims about tanning. They discovered, through numerous surveys, that more than 61% of women 18 and older (and 69% of men) equate a tan with beauty and health (www.aad.org/aad/Newsroom).

Despite the fact that we know that there is no such thing as a safe tan, people still associate bronzed skin with beauty and health, said Dr. Darrel S. Rigel, clinical professor at New York University Medical Center. Whats even more surprising is that the survey showed that 62 % of men and women responded that they know someone who has or had skin cancer, which depending on its location and severity does nothing to improve your looks and can be very detrimental to your health.

Dr. Elizabeth Whitmore, who, like Dr. Rigel, is a member of the AAD, agrees. People continue to invest both time and money into visiting tanning salons despite evidence which have found an increased incidence of melanomathe deadliest form of skin cancer in those who visit indoor tanning salons. Joyce Ayoub, director of public information at the Skin Cancer Foundation further attests to this fact. There is a myth that people like to believe, but it is a myth; not fact. Any tan means damage to the skin.

Further illustrating this point is a study headed by a team of scientists and researchers at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. These researchers discovered that the use of tanning beds and artificial tanning light sourceseven just once, can, indeed, lead to molecular changes in the skin that may lead to cancer. In comparing the effects of a teenager who was exposed for the first dose of tanning beds to multiple doses [] it is evident that there is damage sustained to the molecular structure of the skin even having only been exposed once, Whitmore says.

The researchers at Johns Hopkins, who conducted the study of 10 teenagers who were exposed to full-body tanning beds over a period of two weeks which, she says was similar to the routine a teenager preparing for prom or for a tropical vacation would undertake. The researched found that the subjects skin and blood, (which was carefully analyzed both prior to the UV exposure and after the exposure) had two distinct markers that indicated molecular change.

Whitmore adds, Its another indication that there is biologic activity and that there is cell damage when the skin is exposed to UV rays. This repair process can eventually fail to do its job completely or correctly causing the cells to replicate abnormally [...] this breakdown in the normal functioning of cells can lead to malignant cancer.

In actual fact, the AAD asserts that nearly 90% of skin carcinomas are a result of over-exposure to UV rays. Thusly, The Cancer Crusaders Organization (www.cancercrusaders.org) randomly surveyed college-aged students (18-to-25), and found that nearly 100% reported to having used a tanning bed at least once in their lifetime.

After having been apprised of the risks and dangers associated with tanning, many were undeterred. Not only does tanning help my acne, it helps me a lot during this time of year when theres a great deal of pressure with upcoming finals and during the stresses of the holidays, says Amanda Gusciano, a senior Brigham Young University. Even though, I am aware of the dangers of tanning, there is still that temptation; I havent stopped using tanning beds and I never use sunscreens.

The significance protecting your skin from the harmful affects of UV-B and UV-A rays goes almost without saying; however, I emphasize it emphatically to both my students and especially to my pageant contestants. UV-B and UV-A rays have varied affects on your skin, your immune system, and your body as a whole. UV-B irradiation disrupts the melanocytes, causing them to release the redness known as sunbu. Any change in the color of your skin as a result of over-exposure to the sun is damage to your skin, even if your skin tends to tan as opposed to bu.

All changes in the color of your skin as a result of UV exposure is the melanocytes in your skin (the cells responsible for pigmentation) trying to tell you that normal, healthy cells have been severely disrupted. Have you ever left basketball outside in the hot summer sun for a lengthy period of time? And after you retrieved the ball, you immediately notice that the elasticity of the ball is weakenedit feels rubbery and never quite bounces back? This is exactly what happens to your skin as a result of prolonged UV exposure. Both UV-B and UV-A rays have cumulative effects and coupled together can lead to melanoma skin cancer.

In sum, if you must heed the need to be golden, opt for sunless tanning mousses. There are quality dermatologically-approved sunless tanning mousses available that are reasonably priced, and will give you evenly distributed color, but will do it without the harmful affects of UV-rays. Now you can have the best of both worlds good looks and good health.

For cosmetic eyelid surgery the simple answer is about two weeks. The reality is that there are so many factors that go into the healing process that in an individuals case the healing time can vary. Wblepharoplasty healing hat affects healing time? Some factors that affect healing are which procedures are performed, how easily the patient bruises, how well the eyelids are taken care of during the postoperative period, and how good of a healer the patient is.

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty causes bruising and swelling that starts soon after the surgery. The bruising and swelling will worsen the day after the surgery. Most patients will start improving on the third day after surgery and many patients feel comfortable driving on this day. Simple tasks around the house can be done as long as there is no heavy lifting.

Stitches will be removed by Dr. Ebroon between the fifth and seventh day after surgery. Patients who can work while still being bruised and swollen often choose to work after their stitches come out. There is no exact time when the healing stops. Rather it is a process that involves many stages. Most patients look very good after two weeks. Nevertheless, there is often a slight amount of swelling that can slowly resolve for even twelve months after surgery. Also, the hidden incision in the eyelid slowly loses its red color and becomes thinner. This process can take months to heal as well, but since the incision is hidden it is not an issue. Of course, if more surgery is performed then the healing process takes longer. A brow lift or surgery to remove the under eye bags will increase the healing time somewhat.

Big companies have made lot of money by selling shampoos to people who have dandruff problems. Famous actors and sports stars have endorsed these products. The flaking of dead skin which looks like snowflakes can be embarrassing experience.

Dandruff can happen to a person of any age but it is found in people between the ages of 10 and 70. Dandruff is a sign of skin disease which can be categorized as fungal infection. There is constant itching and flaking of the scalp which many times can be controlled by shampoos. Having dandruff will also be termed as not taking care of your hair properly. There are different types of dandruff depending upon the skin type of the person as well as on the basis of personal hygiene. They appear to be white, yellow, patches of dead scales, sometime small and sometimes big lumps of it. Many believe that dandruff is due to dry hair but it is the opposite which is true i.e. generally people who have oily scalps suffer most from dandruff.

Dandruff is mainly caused due to a fungus called Malassezia furfur (or also known as pityrosporum). This is generally and naturally found on the skin surface of all people. When this fungus grows out of proportion then the renewal of cells gets imbalanced making the scalp itchy. This fungus feeds on the oil which is released by the hair follicles leading towards an increased cell tuover. In some cases the skin cells may die and is replaced fortnightly, as opposed to around once a month which usually is the case in healthy people. There are many reasons which trigger the immense amount of flaking and sometimes cause redness and irritation due to constant itching. By having a healthy living and persona; hygiene one can have beautiful and lustrous hair.

Kevin Pederson has been managing a number of natural home remedies websites which have information on home based natural cures and remedies for some of the most common illnesses and hair problems such as dandruff.

Dandruff is a common problem. You can fall victim to excessive dandruff at any age. 97% of Americans suffer from dandruff at some time. One out of every two persons in the world have problem with dandruff.

Common practice is to treat dandruff with anti-dandruff shampoos. But did you know that you can use simple effective home remedies to treat dandruff? Home remedies may offer complete solutions for controlling dandruff.

One of the best ways to control dandruff is to apply a mixture of vinegar and water on the scalp. Make a mixture of 2 teaspoons of vinegar and 6 teaspoons of water and apply it on the scalp before you go to bed. Keep it for the whole night with a towel around the head. Rinse your head with vinegar water again in the moing. If you continue to treat your hair with it for few months, it will serve your purpose.

You can also use a mixture of 1 teaspoon of lemon juice and 2-teaspoons of vinegar. Massage the scalp with this solution. After the massage, treat your hair with an egg shampoo.

You can rub a combination of 1 part sulfur powder, 2 parts surgical spirit, 1 part almond oil and 4 parts rose water or distilled water on your scalp to keep dandruff at bay. Or:

Boil a mixture of 4-5 dried thyme and two cups of water for 10 minutes. When the mixture cools down, massage it on the scalp and leave it for half an hour. Wash it afterwards and see the results. You will have a dandruff-free head.

You can also soak ground fenugreek seeds oveight in water and massage the paste on the head, leaving it for a few minutes. Wash it afterwards using a mild shampoo.

You can also prepare a homemade mixture of 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice with 100 grams witch hazel in 200ml of water and use it on washed hair. Applying the mixture several times is helpful in warding off the problem of dandruff.

If you wash your hair with warm apple cider vinegar, leaving it for 30-40 minutes and then rinsing it with plain water, you are sure to control dandruff positively. You have to continue this process regularly to stop its retu. The smell of the vinegar does evaporate!

Try a mixture of olive oil and almond oil. Massage your scalp with the mixture and leave it for five minutes after you feel the buing sensation. Rinse properly and you should have a dandruff-free head.

Did you know the well-known pain killer aspirin, used for relieving aches, can serve you equally effectively to eliminate the problem of dandruff? Just crush and powder two aspirin tablets and add it to your shampoo. Leave the mixture on your scalp for two minutes. Rinse and wash properly to remove the aspirin particles completely from the scalp.

You can directly use Aloe Vera gel to remove excess dandruff. Apply the gel on your scalp 10-15 minutes before you plan to wash your hair. Regular use of the gel before shampooing will keep down the growth of dandruff.

These remedies take time to show a visible change but are effective for some people.

The best point conceing a home remedy is that you have many options and, if you think that a particular ingredient does not suit you, you can try an alteative. You should give each remedy at least a week before trying another.

Skin care has spawned a big industry worldwide. The leather coating that nature gave man to protect against wind and sun now needs additional care if one is to get a job, retain a job, get a fianc, retain a fianc, or keep the marriage partner happy. It is all in the show, and the show goes on briskly selling creams and lotions that would make you look younger, pretty, attractive, smart, and beautiful. Magic lotions that would bring the youthful charm back on your face.

Our culture lays stress on youth. It rewards youth with praise, likes their youthful features. Old age is a sickness. No one wants to grow old, or worse still, look old. How it diminishes our value, makes us appear insignificant in front of the young. The young seem to have everything all the happiness, pleasures, fun, and enjoyments are theirs to keep. How much the old would like to keep all of that intact, at whatever cost.

The face is the first mark of youth. This is where the anti-wrinkle skin industry starts. The creases, lines, and wrinkles on the face look ugly. Young people have smooth skin. You must get rid of these age lines first.

In fact, skin care can begin from your diet and daily regimen. True, the blast of the sun can damage facial fibers. Creams and lotions can filter that out. Still, the anti-wrinkle skin industry promises a lot more than that. It promises a young-looking skin to all that may actually never happen. After all, aging is an irreversible process.

The hottest thing on the market right now is eyelash extensions. When I first read about them in a trade magazine last year, I got really excited and started to read up on the procedure, the product and the training. I was sold and ready to be trained in this lucrative business. And then.....

A fellow esthetician described her ordeal with her extensions. Now I know that the majority of people love their extension and go in monthly to have them redone. My suggestion let the buyer beware.

Eyelashes have a very short active growth period, only about 30- 45 days before they mature and fall out, while the hair on your head will grow 2-6 years. This explains why eyelashes are so short. A lost eyelash is not a big deal until there is an extension glued on to the eyelash which makes it a bit more noticeable. Eyelashes with extensions seem to fall out faster the first few weeks, so by the end of the month you need to go back and get them redone.

Extensions can cost anywhere from $350 to $40, and takes about 1 hours to be applied. They take some time to get used to. They may be uncomfortable or sting in the beginning and may cause crusty eyes in the moing. Some unfortunate clients received spikey eyelashes that hurt the whole month. One must be careful removing eye make-up, rubbing eyes, avoiding high heat (saunas) and not to get these extra long lashes in the eye. Ouch

But now coming into the market getting hotter all the time is the eyelash growth serum. Does it work. YES I heard rumors of one of the developers with eyelashes so thick, there wasnt room on her eyes for more. I had to try it for myself. On one eye I tried one of the more expensive products that ran $160. On the other eye I tried a little known ( in the USA) product from Europe for around $35. I had a before and after picture taken. The results were amazing Both products performed equally as well with very little if any apparent difference. My sparse eyelashes became longer fuller and thicker within 3 weeks. The bottom lashes that were almost non-existent were now long thick and noticeable. There was a difference in a matter of days and these serums work on eyebrows too. The product lasts a long time and there is no obvious fall out as there is with the extensions.

My vote is to go natural with your own long thick lashes using growth serums. They are much more comfortable, they hold up better and longer and most important, they are your own.

So you want to look like a star?

Who doesnt? It would be really nice to wake up and have someone else worry about your hair and makeup.

Celebrities have people whose very jobs are to help famous faces look their best.

Award-winning actresses, runway models, even pop stars all depend on their looks.

Do advertisers want to feature close-ups of crows feet?

Who wants to see cellulite on the big screen?

Teen idols should look young and fresh so their audience will want to be like them. Its their job to look great.

Without a beautifully packaged look, theyre out of work. So work they do. They work at their beauty.

And so can you.

But, you dont have beauty professionals at your beck and call

Oh, but you do.

Just not the same ones the celebrities do.

You're worthy of a cast of beauty professionals, too.

You deserve it and its not a luxury impossible to afford.

Consider your beauty people and, if you choose carefully, you will have professionals looking out for you, keeping you up to date on the best products, colors and techniques available for you.

How do you choose the right people?

Use only professionals whose overall look is something you like.

If you're seeking a natural look, look for make-up and hair stylists who successfully achieve that look.

If they can do it for themselves, they can teach you the same techniques they're using.

If you want to appear polished and sophisticated, use a stylist whose own personal style impresses you.

Department store makeup counter salespeople

Use them. You dont need to buy any of their products, unless you want to. But what they can teach you at no cost is something you should really take advantage of.

They're trained in proper technique and are up on the latest trends.

Independent beauty consultants

That neighbor leaving catalogs in your mailbox is a good source of ideas. Invite her over and let her give you a makeover. Again, you're not obligated to purchase anything unless you really want it.

Hairdressers

Hairstyles change with the times, so should your stylist. If shes not attending stylists conventions or changing her own hairstyle, shes not as professional as you deserve.

So, now you have your people.

What do stars do when theyre at home being people, not stars?

Beauty Sleep

Its not a myth. Get yours.

No caffeine
or limited caffeine if you must. It causes premature aging, and who needs that?

Shimmer creams and bronzers
help stars shine.

Eat Fish
like sardines and salmon. They're full of essential oils that actually nourish your skin.

No smoking
Not only is it bad for your health, it causes lines and dullness in your skin.

Your skin care regime
It doesnt have to be expensive. Your products can come from the local drug store. Everyone benefits from a cleanser, a toner, and a moisturizer.

Always, always, always remove makeup at the end of the day. Two more minutes of sleep is not worth a blemished face in the moing. Quick fixes from famous faces.

*Coffee grounds can be recycled and used as a cellulite scrub.

*Castor oil, used by a certain British raven- haired actress/spokesperson/ beauty, creates star quality shine for hair.

*Cinnamon oil (check your health food or vitamin store) rubbed on the lips creates pouty, kissable lips.

*Soak your nails in olive oil, as does a Hollywood Pretty Woman.

*A combination of milk and water mixed in equal parts, spritzed on the face throughout the day is all the rage with many silver screen beauties.

*Legally Blonde hair is baby soft and shiny thanks to baby shampoo.

Glow like a star. You deserve to look your best. Treat yourself to a day of beauty - at home or at the salon. Live the life of a star, without being chased by paparazzi.

Health, strength and beauty of hair depends primarily on its nerve vigor and the good circulation of the oily scalp secretion which gives it gloss and luster. Beauty is not so much a matter of color where hair is conceed. If your hair has a fine glow, a rich sheen, is thick and long, it will be beautiful irrespective of its pigmentation. Hair often makes an otherwise plain person beautiful. And practically every woman, if she cares to make the effort, may have beautiful hair.

SOME HAIR HINTS

If you have the least suspicion of a curl in your hair, brushing around rather than straight will bring it out. Do not worry if you shed your hair. It is natural for the hair to shed and to keep right on growing in again. Only see to it that the ingrowth is equal to the loss by shedding.

No young girl should use a rat. Metal combs should be tabooed. Keep the hairbrush you use for dandruff stiff, the "polishing" brush may be softer. Use a hair net that matches your own hair color, and do not get too small a one. Remove snarls and tangles in the hair gently, with fingers, before brushing. The three-weekly or monthly shampoo is a good rule. If you wash your hair too often, it will tu dry and brittle and change color.

The hair should never be wo "done up" constantly. This is injurious because every part of the hair should have frequent air and sun baths. For normal shampoo employ Castile, tar or vegetable soaps, and Green soap for oily hair. A good egg shampoo may be made of an egg, thoroughly beaten, one tablespoon alcohol, four ounces bay rum, a pinch of borax, and four ounces of Castile soap mixed in a pint of hot water, to be used when cool.

Hair that is blonde or ruddy, as well as gray hair, may be washed with Castile soap jelly plus a quarter-teaspoonful of borax. Always comb and brush thoroughly, with finger-tip massage. After shampooing is the best time for scalp massage, hair pulling and skin loosening.

DRY SHAMPOO AND SCALP MASSAGE

The scalp and hair should be cleansed between shampoos. For this purpose the "dry shampoo" is necessary. It is actually a form of scalp massage. Preparations of orris, co meal and other dry shampoo powders are not recommended. They stick, and it is hard to get them out of the hair. A vigorous rubbing of the scalp after the hair has been parted, using a small piece of muslin over the tip of the finger, is best. Hot and cold applications are good, with or without shampoo, especially if the hair is falling. Remember that the hair should not be "hot-air" dried. The hot-air cone used for the purpose in hairdressing establishments destroys the hair. Human hair should always be dried by hand.

Scalp massage makes the hair grow and prevents many hair troubles. A five-minute finger-tip mas- sage, night and moing, is the one ounce of prevention worth a pound of cure. The electrical massage by a professional (after a shampoo), the violet ray, and the rubber-disk vibrator are all excellent for the hair. They strengthen and stimulate.

HAIR TONICS

Massage is the first and best hair tonic. Though a good scalp lotion may stimulate circulation, massage always does so more directly. In general it will be wise to remember that tonics are meant for specific purposes of cure for hair disorders, rather than for common use. A little refined beef marrow rubbed gently into the hair roots is a good natural tonic (though an old-fashioned one) and together with plenty of fresh air and sunshine, does more for the hair than all the compounded tonics and "restorers" marketed. Every woman can keep her hair in good condition if she chooses to. If she cannot give it attention in the moing she shoulcf do so at night.

HAIR TROUBLES

Most hair troubles could be prevented in the start by ordinary good care of the hair, and the maintenance of the state of general good health. Of course, various diseases affect the hair: fever dries it out and makes it fall; syphilis and other sex diseases poison and destroy it. Some skin diseases have the same effect. In general, if you are healthy, broadly speaking, your hair will be healthy too.

DandruffWhat we have to deal with in dandruff is a hoy layer cast off by the scalp. This layer thickens, closes the pores, diminishes the hair's oil supply, and prevents the perspiration glands from getting rid of waste. Soon the hair loses tone and color, and is covered with whitish powder. Then it starts to itch and fall. In an advanced state of the disease, the hair falls out, and blood crusts form on the scalp as a result of scratching. Digestive disorders, toxic elements in the blood or local irritation may cause dandruff, and it is communicable.

Daily care of the scalp, massage and brushing, if persisted in when the disorder first appears, are very beneficial. The crude oil massage of the scalp, not the hair, is excellent and often effects a cure. A massage every night, using vaseline or olive oil, together with repeated shampoos, also helps to do away with dandruff. Although pomades in general should be avoided, a pomade with a precipitated sulphur base, mixed with glycerine, rose-water, lanoline, and soap, or a sulphur ointment or cream kills the dandruff germ.

There is an "oily dandruff," also, though the disease is most commonly a dry scalp one. Shampoo with tincture of Green soap should cure this type of the disease in about a week's time. If you have dandruff, observe a regular diet, and stick as much as possible to milk and fresh fruit.

Falling Hair.An acid condition of the blood encourages the hair to fall. Correct it and you will have removed the cause of your complaint. The use of the violet ray and the vibrator, which hold down the tendency to an oily scalp, is also valuable for hair treatment in this connection. So, too, are hot and cold applications.

HAIR DISEASES WHICH SHOULD NOT OCCUR

Favus, the development of yellow scalp crusts, accompanied by severe itching, bald spots and a musty odor, is a dirt disease, hence inexcusable in a woman, unless as a result of infection. To remove it the scalp must be soaked in olive oil for a few days, carbolic acid being mixed with it in a weak solution, the hair pulled out of the most infected areas, the crusts removed, and the whole scalp shampooed with an antiseptic soap.

Ringworm is usually a gift of those evil things, the "common property" comb and brush, or the patent hair clipper. Rubbing with sulphur ointment, washing with bichloride soap, or painting with iodine, to precede the application of a cleansing ointment, is the treatment. It is dangerous since it may result in baldness.

Head lice (which may be cured by saturating the hair with kerosene or crude petroleum at night, wrapping in a towel to retain fumes, and following by antiseptic soap shampoo) is a most disgusting trouble, and unless communicated cannot occur except as a result of neglect and uncleanliness. The possibility of contagion constitutes the menace of all three of these diseases.
